St Catherine of Alexandria

This hand-painted Orthodox icon depicts Saint Catherine of Alexandria (also known as Ekaterina, Aikaterini, Katerina), the Great Martyr and one of the most celebrated female saints in Christianity. A noblewoman of Alexandria in the 4th century, she was renowned for her wisdom and eloquence, confounding pagan philosophers and defending the Christian faith. For her steadfast witness, she was martyred under Emperor Maxentius. In iconography, she is often shown with a martyr’s cross, a book, and the wheel on which she was tortured.
