This premium Orthodox icon is created using the traditional silkscreen technique on cotton canvas, mounted on solid natural carved wood with a raised border (kovcheg). The background has a polished gold gilding effect (burnished mirror finish), symbolizing the divine and uncreated light of God.
It features an integrated wooden stand that allows the icon to stand upright on a desk, shelf, or prayer corner, and a hole on the back for wall hanging. The icon is varnished for long-lasting protection and comes with a certificate of authenticity.
Iconography & Symbolism
The Theotokos Paramythia Icon (Greek: Παναγία Παραμυθία, meaning “Our Lady of Consolation” or “Comforting”) is one of the most beloved wonderworking icons of the Virgin Mary. The original is venerated at the Vatopedi Monastery on Mount Athos.
In this icon, the Theotokos is shown with the Christ Child seated on her left arm. In a tender yet commanding gesture, she places her right hand gently on His arm, while Christ raises His hand to bless. This moment reflects divine compassion and maternal intercession.
The name Paramythia (“Consolation”) comes from a miraculous event in which the Theotokos warned the monks of Vatopedi about an impending attack and saved the monastery — a sign of her constant care and mercy for the faithful.
Above her appear the letters ΜΡ ΘΥ (Meter Theou), meaning “Mother of God,” and beside Christ, IC XC, meaning “Jesus Christ.” Within His halo, the cross bears Ω Ο Ν (Omega, Omicron, Nu) – “He Who Is.”
