Gold Leaf Orthodox Icons

All of our icons are painted according to the old Byzantine techniques and traditions. We use premium lime or linden wood panels, linen cloth and several layers of gesso to prepare the icon boards. The background is gilded with 24 karat gold leaf. Some icons feature polished gold halos. Agate stone is used for burnishing the gold leaf until a mirror-like, brilliant effect is achieved. Egg yolk is mixed with powder paints as per the classic egg tempera technique. Finally the icons are varnished for long lasting protection.
